How to Embed Functional Skills...

Opportunities for learners to improve their functional skills should always be provided through out any course or sessions, they are practical skills that are needed for everyday life regardless of a person's ability, please see below a case study as to how the functional skills could be improved through out a session:

Case Study

A group of 10 learners that are on a 10 week cup cake decorating course, they are lower ability and are adult learners, varying ages from 22 to 45 years, the course is non accredited.

English Skills can be embedded by getting learners to read their recipes and may be they could find their own recipes. If they need specific ingredients for their recipes, they could be asked to write down their shopping list so they know they need. As the course is non accredited they wouldn't need to write assignments however if it was accredited they may be asked to write them.

Maths Skills can be embedded in a number of ways, for example, measuring out the ingredigents using the weighing scales or measuring size, e.g. 10 small butterflies to go on top of the cup cakes. They will need to be able to count amounts; how many of things, for example if there are 10 cupcakes and each cake need 2 chocolates, how many chocolates would you need? Money skills for buying their ingredients but they also progress in to selling them to make a profit, so they need to have the skills to work out their profit margins etc. Time management is vital, to make sure they attend the course but also they don't burn the cup cakes in the over and get all the timing right.

ICT Skills: can be embedded by getting the learners to use digital scales, this will also incorporate maths skills. If they have to find different recipes they may wish to find them online as there are more options and they can be easily accessed. If they are unsure or want to practise a certain skill they have learnt in class they may want to look at 'utube' videos and practise them. Instead of going to the shop and physically buying the ingredients they could try ordering online as this will help them to use the computer and they can use this in every day life. Also if they do decide to go down the profit making route they can advertise online on sites such as 'facebook'.

If all functional skills are being embedded it is vital that feedback is given so that the learners can improve and progress forward with their work.
